Sir Edward Elgar (1857—1934) composed “Salut D’Amour” in 1888 as an engagement gift to his wife, author Alice Elgar (1848—1920). Originally written for violin and piano—two instruments the composer performed quite well at an early age—the work is an intimate miniature, sentimental yet never overt or saccharine. It remains one of his most famous compositions, a testament to Elgar’s gift for melody and accompanimental nuance.
