Misterium

Misterium by Mark Tonelli. Misterium combines both classical and jazz styles.The piece opens on a stark B7#9 chord, a decidedly jazz harmony. Throughout the piece, other jazz voicings are sprinkled in and there are common jazz chord progressions, such as the series of ii-V chord progressions. In contrast, the piece abounds in classical influence and techniques such as flamenco and Classical (Sor-like melodies) that permeate this composition. As such, this piece highlights the interplay that can exist between these two beautiful styles of music.
